August 3 – Budapest, Hungary

We made it through the shallow stretch of the Danube, with only 8 inches to spare under the boat’s draft.  Docked were also several tourist boats coming the other way (downstream) that had bigger drafts than ours, and could not make it through the shallow stretch.

Since we arrived a day early in Budapest, a morning excursion to the large indoor market and walking street was arranged.

After lunch we had a three plus hour city tour that took us along the Danube River...

and through the main city center...

that included the palace (just a view),

Heroes Square,

and St. Matthew’s Church.

The plaza by the church had a fairy tale look about it...

and there was a bridal couple there having their pictures taken.

The views of the Danube and the parliament building were spectacular from the church’s hill.

The tour took us up through Castle Hill where we had views,

fountains,

and a a rather interesting looking memorial.

We stopped in this little courtyard where the guide pointed out the long pole on the wall.  This is where they could hang a large rug or tapestry and beat it to get the dust out.

It turns out that Harry Houdini was from Budapest and there was a House of Houdini.  We didn't go in.

Hungary is known for its paprika (a spiced made from ground peppers).  And we saw it available everywhere, both the whole and ground spice.

Just before dinner we were treated to an awesome show that featured four dancers and three musicians.  The Hungarian dances are extremely energetic.

One dance featured the two women dancing rather energetically with a large glass vessel on their heads.  What was quite funny was that the vessel fell off the top of the head of one of the women just as they had finished the dance.  Made quite a mess on the floor.

The biggest highlight of the day was the “Illumination Cruise”.  They needed to reposition the boat to their assigned dock so put the repositioning off until the waterfront was lit.

There is nothing like sailing down the Danube under the stars, listening to Straus waltzes and enjoying the incredible illuminated buildings.  Absolutely magical.
